Music Marketing Blog Post #1

For my group's Music Marketing Project, we received the genre "Rock." Out of the various songs my group viewed, we chose the song "Mother Mother" by Tracy Bonham. We believe we can execute our project well with this song. Our first step was to listen to the entire song and process the meaning of the lyrics. Then we filled out a music research chart regarding the specific Rock companies and its artists, showcasing the multiple ways their platform distributes music. The next day, we discussed the specifics of our artist and began to create their brand. We figured out our target audience, which we concluded would appeal from late teenagers to young adults.

We decided to name our music artist Chastity, giving her a stage name that would go along with the rebellious punk rock aesthetic. Our music video will follow a storytelling outline. At the start of the scene, Chastity is depicted as an average teen dressing in colorful apparel. During the time before she leaves for college, her personality can be described as respectful and reserved. Towards the end of our music video, there will be a shift in Chastity's personality, where she once was a young naive adolescent and begins to face adult issues in the real world as she has gained her independence. These new experiences cause her to become overwhelmed with life’s difficulties. As an outlet for her struggle she becomes unruly in nature, and begins to dress in darker color.

My group faced a few challenges in our brainstorming process. One of these challenges included our differing music preferences. As youth from Gen Z, we typically do not listen to older forms of rock music such as "Mother Mother," so we were hesitant to utilize this song in the first place. After doing thorough research, we decided to take on the challenge and step outside our comfort zones, since we now had a broader understanding of its unique style. In this new virtual learning environment, it is often difficult to collaborate over the internet, since we are unable to communicate as we would in person. The next steps in our production include creating a story board that is a display of the first minute and thirty seconds of our project. We will also construct a website and social media platforms for our artist, such as Instagram and Twitter. After this, we would film our video using media production techniques, such as a combination of close-up shots and jump-cut scenes. This would conclude the planning portion of our media marketing project.
